An outage in Amazon Web Services disrupted numerous websites and applications on October 21, 2025. The issue originated in the US-EAST-1 region in Northern Virginia, affecting services reliant on AWS infrastructure.

The problem began around 2:40 a.m. Eastern Time, with increased error rates and latencies reported across multiple AWS services. By 3:11 a.m., Amazon confirmed investigation into the disruptions. Signs of recovery appeared by 5:27 a.m., and most operations returned to normal by 6:35 a.m.

Affected platforms included Amazon, Venmo, Ring, Slack, WhatsApp, Coinbase, Lloyds Bank, Perplexity, Signal, Snapchat, Reddit, and the British government's website. Airports, such as LaGuardia in New York, experienced issues with check-in kiosks and apps, leading to longer lines.

The confirmed cause was a Domain Name System error impacting the Elastic Compute Cloud internal network, which affected DynamoDB, Simple Queue Service, Amazon Connect, and other services. This prevented applications from accessing stored data, despite the data remaining secure.

As of 6:35 a.m. Eastern Time, AWS reported that systems had returned to normal operations, with disruptions easing across affected sites.
